Mary Magdalene
In the Christian bible Mary Magdalene was believed to be one of Jesus's followers. According, to the bible when Jesus is crucified by the Romans, Mary Magdalene was there supporting him in his final terrifying moments and mourning his death. She is also believed to discover the empty tomb and a witness to the resurrection. Who was Mary Magdalene? From the New Testament, one can conclude that Mary of Magdala was a leading figure among those attracted to Jesus. In the bible is doesn't directly say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute but, in art she's often semi-naked, or an isolated hermit repenting for her sins in the wilderness: an outcast. Her primary link with Jesus is as the woman washing and anointing his feet. The bible provides no personal details of her age, status or family. In one Jewish text which mentions Magdala, called Laentations Raba, says is the Magdala is judged by God and destroyed because if its fornication. It is possible that the description of Magdala as a place of fornication is the origin of the idea that arose in western Christianity that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. However, her name, Mary of Magdala, could suggest something else altogether: she was unmarried. A married woman would have carried her husband's name and Mary didn't. In the bible the Gospel of Luke tells that Jesus cast seven demons out of Mary. (Luke 8:2) In the bible it says (3) the "sinner" She annointed Jesus feet with her tears, and he pronounced her sins forgive. (L 7:50) (4) the woman taken in adultery Jesus said to her: "I do not condem you; go and sin no more". (J 8:1-11) Mary seem here to be a prostitute but in the gospels several women come into the story of Jesus with great energy, including erotic energy. There are several Mary's-not least, of course, Mary the mother of Jesus but there is Mary of Bethnany, sister of Martha and Lazarus. There is Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and Mary the wife of Clopas. Equally important there are three unnamed women who are expressly identified as sexual sinners. The four Gospels are not eyewitness accounts. They were written 35 to 65 years after Jesus's death, a jelling separate oral traditions that had taken for in dispersed Christian communities. Overall there is not enough information in the bible that says Mary Magdalene was indeed a prostitute but there are information that leads her to be one.
