Prostitution has been around for decades. It was around during the Ancient Rome Empire and it was certainly in the 1930s during the Great Depression. On October 29, of 1929 the stock market crashed which was the official beginning of the Great Depression. From there banks and people started losing their money putting people into poverty and out of jobs. During this madness there was one occupation that didn't fail. Prostitution during the 1930s was still big. Prostitutes would get paid typically two dollars for fifteen minutes.
There were two types of houses. the "ringer" and the "independent". A "ringer" house belongs to a ring or a chain, with a central office, like a chain store. Girls are registered at the office, according to age, complexion, measurements and years of experience.
The girls have to show their certificate of health to the Madame or lose their jobs. The customer can always see it if he wants to. The tests cost three dollars to five dollars. Ringer houses get a twelve hour advance tip before any raid which each girl splits fifty percent of her earnings.
In a good house with ten to fifteen customers per day isn't uncommon for the prostitute to earn five extra dollars. This helps them cover their laundry bill and payment for two meals per day. Half of the regular two dollar fee goes to the house to pay for the protection.
Prostitutes would go on call for private parties. Their shift is around eight hours form 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Old girls go from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. which these hour include the drunks. A customers average age was thirty to forty years which most were married.
The prostitutes take a four to seven days off a month. Some girls are called to party on a millionaires yacht which they usually get about one hundred dollars plus food. Girls who work from a call house have a day job, as a waitress or usherette or drive in joint or movie extra with their phone numbers listed for any call from headquarters to go to an apartment for an hour or so. This gives the girls three to give dollars.
1932- Japan
Military brothels were created all over the occupied areas of Asia during the war for the use of Japanese soldiers. The first were set up as early as 1932 but most were created after the outbreak of full-scale fighting in China in 1937. Some of these were managed by civilians for profit, but frequented by members of the Japanese armed forces; Some were directly run by Japanese military. The number of women recruited to work in some of these places unknown is estimated around 20,000 to 400,000, though historian Yoshimi Yoshiaki did a careful study suggesting it range between 50,000 and 200,000. Some of these workers were Japense women who work as prostitutes previously and were "volunteers" but were by pressures of poverty, debt, and desperation. There was a large number of Korea and China girls as well who were lured away from their homes with promises of work in factories or restaurants, only to find themselves incarcerated in "comfort stations" in foreign lands. Other women in Korea, and southwest Asia were rounded up by gun point.
